I found this list of top 100 books in the UK collected by the BBC that I thought could be an interesting resource for picking future reads. Unfortunately it hasn't been updated since 2003 but there are some great classics on here that I think we should consider!

I also found this list of the New York Times' notable books of 2008 that we should consider. Many of them are only in hardcover but should come out in paperback soon. You can also look back at the previous years' lists.

And there is always Indiebound (formerly Booksense) which shows the latest best-sellers in independent bookstores, sorted by hardcover/paperback fiction/nonfiction.
